In the light of SE having their own financial challenges in the sense that for the past decade or so, they have only turned a profit possibly only 2 or 3 times and only a slim profit.

Hence they need to be very smart and careful how much money to invest in R&D and the types of handsets. Actually SE has quite a number of different handsets to suit different price points and different types of users.

I think from that point of view they should be commended.

Great News from Sony Ericsson. Actually the updates have been coming regularly compared to other OEMs. But I guess they are trying to make up for the X10 debacle from last year. In any case thanks a lot to SE.

However ... , However ... They need to synchronise their codebase with ICS in any case so that the current prototypes now can also be launched with ICS in the near future. Since I don't see a reason that the prototypes would be running a SW which is totally branched out from the current Xperia Codebase it should be relatively easy to port it to the current line up as well. Not suggesting that it is a trivial task but just the fact that they are giving ICS to 2011 Line up is reason enough to appreciate SE. Thanks a lot and we are not ungrateful ... I mean we are really grateful and happy.

@Uli, Regarding the dates, I would hazard a guess: Just about the same time as the availability of SE's newly announced Handsets from MWC or CES. Current prototypes share same codebase with 2011 Lineup. So when 2012 Lineup from MWC/CES are ready it means 2011 Lineup is also ready to get the ICS. So that would mean somewhere around Feb 2012 at the earliest. Surprise us SE.. Go ahead. Won't you??:smileysilly:

I think most of the Android 2.3.5/6/7 are related to Nexus S. Nothing interesting.

However USB OTG is not part of Android 2.3, its part of Honeycomb. SE did something there. Very nice. These days it cost a lot of effort to put out an update. Earlier the SW used to be the same across all countries, barely a few changes. No monkey models also.Testing also is faster because only small screen, 1.3 MP camera, java, IR, no wifi, 2 G no apps, no weird touch inputs, no camera effects, just click button, no mp3 also!! e.g. T310i etc . These days they need to build differently for different countries and test all variants separately and then they have to make sure the hundreds of subfunctionalities work fine with the update. Lots and lots of manhours involved. Gone are the days when updates can be rolled out twice a month. Anyway phone prices also tripled so I guess it balances out. However if SE is trying to fix something useful like camera and speed which I feel degraded wit 2.3.4, then they should go ahead although I am sure they are going straight for ICS, 4.0.1/2/3 directly.
