Sony Xperia SP - Screen won't light up during calls!

I can make calls and receive calls but when I call someone the screen goes black and it's not lighting up again, except the other person hangs up the phone. I've tried to go back to factory settings but it still the same.

Btw, I have no cover or screen protector.

Seems strange. Have you tried repairing the phone software via PC Companion? If not, give it a try:

I did but did not work.

I've find a way to check to promixity switch which is '' *#*#7378423#*#* '' and it seemed ON. I read it somewhere that I should plug in and out the earphone cable and voila, it turned to OFF. And problem was solved.

But again, it turned into ON by itself, even though I made it off again, It's turning back to ON again and again.

Isn't there a way to keep this option OFF all the time? This is a serious problem, please give me some solution other than giving it back to Sony to check the device, I need the phone.

Same problem here, and it's a serious issue.

On a call, as soon as I put the phone up to my ear the screen blanks out and stays that way when I lower it...so there is no way to access the screen at all during the call.

I've found I can only hang up by enabling Power Button Ends Call under Settings>Accessibility.

So I'm making the bulk of my calls using speaker phone.

I have the same issue on my phone, but not always : If I hold off my head from the phone before 1 min after the screen has turned off, the screen bringht on light and work fine. After 1 min, the screen stay black and definitivly.

1 min I say ? It's exactly the time that I have configured for the screen autolock .

- Settings > Display > Sleep > After 1 minute of inactivity

- Settings > Security > Automatically lock > Immediatly after sleep

- Settings > Security > Screen lock > PIN (or other than No and Swipe)

So my hypothesis is that the auto lock prevent the screen to be turned on even if any mecanical button is pushed. Why ? I don't know, but I think that if the auto lock, or the sleep, or the screen lock, is disabled, the bug will vanish.

A tips that work sometime is to hold the camera button, to take a picture : It's possible event if the sreen is off and close. If the screen briefly turn on, push the Home button to go to the lock screen.

A more brutal way to end a call is to eject the SIM card (trigg a phone reboot :x )

After some search, the screen protection seems to be also a cause of the bug. I will try to make a little hole in it to see if it's works.

Someone say that shake the phone is a solution and work some times.

Screen protectors are often the cause of issues with the proximity sensor, it is always worth removing any screen protector you may have (not the anti shatter film though!) to see if the problem continues.

I just bought my Xperia SP in September, and when I've made or had calls on it, the same thing happens, with the screen blacking out and being unable to "wake" it back up to end the calls. I don't use a screen protector (haven't bought one yet), so I know that's not the issue. My poor dad had to listen to a 5 min voice mail rant of me trying to end the call I made to him. I even tried to shut it down completely, but couldn't even do that. I was completely locked out. I am currently trying the repair method that was suggested, but in reading this thread, see that it has a strong chance of not working.

Am wondering if any further investigation/solutions have been persued, considering this seems to be a wide-spread problem?

This is not a problem with any individual phone, but a shortcoming of the Sony's version of Android that affects all Xperias SP if the user enables a screen lock and the proximity sensor is enabled.

The short answers - Sony geniuses simply didn't program the phone to account for this scenario, which on Samsung and iPhone is handled as it should - whever you pull the phone away from your face the screen comes back on. Alas, it's just Sony engineering, so don't bother sending your phone in for a repair.

Why not update the phones software to give us an option to switch the proximity sensor off...?

The screen lock doesn't cause any problem when i try this here so this sounds more like a problem with the proximity sensor in your phone.

First make sure that you don't have any cover or screen protector that's covering it. I also recommend that you try making a repair of the phones software using Update Service: http://www.sonymobile.com/global-en/tools/update%20service/.

If that doesn't help i suggest that you contact a service location or local Sony Xperia support (http://www.sonymobile.com/global-en/support/contact-us/) for assistance.

I also had the same problem. When I call someone, my xperia SP screen goes black and I cannot light up my screen unless the person in the other end ends the call. This only happens when I call from outdoor not while I call from my room or some places where there is less light (comparatively). I have screen protector in my device. However,I found out that whenever my screen goes black, I just clicked the power button twice and I was able to light up my screen even while I call from outdoor. So to those who are having this problem try clicking power button twice. For those whose have checked the "Power button ends call", first uncheck that option and try method as described above. Hope this helps.

I have exact same problem, sometimes this bug affects my screen during call. I suspect that it is related to

- Settings > Display > Sleep > After 1 minute of inactivity

It's clearly a software issue as I got this problem after update. Pl suggest some way out or release software patch to fix this problem.

Did you tired the method I described above?? Another thing you can do is increase the brightness through settings and see if that helps. I worked for me.

Unfortunately, the Update Service software does NOT include Xperia SP in its list of phones...

The only thing that works so far is pressing the power button twice when the screen goes of when making or receiving calls...

This is a clearly a bug, perhaps due to the Android 4.3 release for the Xperia SP.

If it won't gets fixed soon by SONY (I already went to the service for OTHER issue and got my device replaced, and I'm not willing to stay again without a phone for days to check this thing too) guess what my next brand of phone will be. Yep. NOT SONY.
