I've got the Sony Xperia 1. On my old Sony phone I could type happy and an emoji would appear etc. I can't do this on the new phone..help

the app probably has to learn your typing habits but:

open the messaging app > open any conversation > tap on the blank space to type a reply > once you see the keyboard > tape on settings > text correction > show emoji suggestions

In addition to what @uliwooly mentioned, you can also add a dedicated emoji key on the keyboard where you can search all available emojis. To do this, Find and tap Settings > System > Languages & input > On-screen keyboard > Gboard > Preferences > Show emoji-switch key.
