Have you tried using iMovie and an iLink cable?

Many thanks for the response. The iLink cable is the best option but whilst the type required is IEEE1364iLink but these come in a variety of cable ends etc The handycam has a small connector whilst my iMac has a

FireWire 800 port - so (eventually!!) what cable type do I need?????

There are 3 sizes of Firewire - 9-pin, 6-pin and 4-pin.

The camcorder needs a mini-firewire 4-pin connector (iLink). Is your Firewire 800 on the iMac 9 or 6-pin?
