Setting manual audio level on AX53 for music recording

Hello

I have and FDR AX53 camcorder with an ECM XYST1M microphone. I am looking for advice on what level to set the audio record level. I am recording opera singers in close proximity and want to avoid the sound levels clipping. At the moment I have set the level to just below the middle. As far as I can see the the camera doesn't show if clipping is happening.

I was previously using the HDR MV1 where it was very easy to see if clipping was happening - unfortunately I found the fish eye lens on the MV1 unsuitable for recording concerts

Any advice welcome.
