TV and sound bar volume not same

I have a Sony kd-xe8599 TV and Sony ht-xf9000 soundbar. Their volume level can not be the same. For example when TV volume is 50,  I turn the soundbar on and sound bar volume is 50 I turn down the volume to 30. Now tv should be 30 too if I disconnect the soundbar to use only tv's sound. But when I do that, the tv volume is still 50. Before I had a LG sound bar and it worked very good, you control both tv and sound bar volume always at the same level with tv remote. Sony can't do this? Anyone help me please. Thanks a lot.

Hi @opo009,

I don't use a soundbar, yet I use and have used+seen many sound-systems in my life and when using an external sound system I (and everyone I know) turn the TVs volume to 0 or mute it since the TVs inbuild speakers have a lower sound-quality then the speakers of the external sound system (which is the reason one buys an external sound system/soundbar) and would therefore stick out.

Also the numbers shown on the soundbar, the TV or any other audio device are just arbitrary numbers and don't mean the two devices have the same volume by any means.

Hi @opo009

Normally you set the TV to use external speakers when a sound system is connected and in use. When the sound system is off the TV internal speakers then are used. As IamNic says, the two should not operate at the same time.

Check your audio settings / speakers and there will be the selection.

Regards

I don’t think, as the two earlier replies seem to assume, that you are trying to use both lots of speakers at once.

It is more a case of how the volume levels change, or don’t change, as you use them, and then switch between them.

But the observation above that the volume numbers on each device are arbitrary, and don’t necessarily describe the same sound level, is important to bear in mind.

However, I have a few more questions before I can really help (if I can help at all) :-

How is the soundbar connected to the TV?

I would hope via HDMI, and using ARC. If not, I suggest you connect the two devices that way.

Which remote are you controlling the soundbar with?

If the soundbar remote, it’s not at all surprising you see what you do, as this will hardly feed back to the TV.

But if it is the TV remote, then I would still expect it to control the soundbar volume over CEC (Bravia Sync) if you are using the HDMI connection, and not alter the TV volume, for as long as you had the soundbar active.

When you have turned the soundbar down to 30, and used it, and then disconnected it (from the TV, but not from mains power), and you then reconnect it, is it still at 30, or has it reverted to 50?

If it is still 30, I would regard that as correct; you chose a suitable soundbar volume, and the soundbar retained the value.

But if the soundbar reverts to 50 (which is presumably too loud) then that is not ideal; if this is the case, and is still the case after you connect the two devices via HDMI/ARC, or if you don’t want to connect them that way for some reason, then come back with the answer, explaining how the two devices are connected.

I’m useing hdmi/arc and the TV remote control.

If i do what you said the TV and Soud bar dont affect each other which means they remain when I disconnect and reconnect the sound bar both of them are the same volume as they were.

That’s good then, yes?

What I want is sound bar volume affect TV volume. Like when sound bar is 50 TV is also 50. If I disconnect sound bar TV is also 50. Now I turn down TV to 40. Later I connect sound bar again, both of them are 50.

Hi @opo009

The TV and sound bar/AV amps volumes are independent by design. As previously explained some users prefer to set the TV volume to zero. As far as I know this design feature cannot be altered and never has been since I have been using Sony TVs for over 30 years.

But before I bought this soundbar. I bought another soundbar which is LG SJ-9 for a few days(returned it coz sound is not ok). It worked as I mentioned with my sony TV. No matter how much volume you set on the soundbar 30 50  55....you will find the tv  always goes with soundbar volume when you disconnect it.

Hello @opo009,

I don't doubt that it worked that way, yet there is no sense in that function, since the volume levels indicated by the numbers are arbitrary and can mean the TV is much louder/quieter when you disconnect the soundbar.
