Avoid data roaming?

I have unlimited data at the moment, so I have Yahoo Mail, Google News etc which update regularly.

I am going to US for holiday next week - can you advise how I can avoid data roaming charges (use the phone as just a phone)?

Also - can I use GPS/navigation over there without roaming charges?

Any help greatly appreciated (for a total non-techie person!)

on the homescreen -> long press -> widget -> data traffic, by doing so you will turn off all data, thus you won't get charge for mms, or internet usage. but you will receive calls and txts

but of course

go to

settings -> location & security -> use wireless networks and use gps satellites

now download some of this OFFLINE maps
