xdr-s55dab 'no battery' sign wrongly indicated

Recently my Sony xdr-s55dab DAB radio has the 'no battery' sign continuously showing. I bought a new standard 6V adapter thinking this would fix the problem. When I plugged it in, the 'no battery' sign is still showing.

I have recently bought brand new batteries to try them, and sure enough the no battery sign is still showing!

Is the radio dead or is there any way I can fix it?

I have two of these radios and the same has happened to me with both of them.  Both radios work from the mainsw but the reset memory is no more and I have to retune every time I switch on - very boring.  Sony have been no help whatsoever other than saying that electronic items can be expected to fail after a time!  A warning not to buy Sony again.
