When I try to make a call, the person on the other end answers the phone but I can't hear them and they can't hear me. The seconds tick by to show we are connected but we can't speak to each other.

Can you please test the microphone? To do this go to Settings > About Phone > Diagnostics > Test > Microphone. See if you can record a sound and play it back.
