Hi, I got my new xperia ray. awesome stuff. nevertheless i have this issue.
I had a K810i Phone, I wanted to transfer all contacts from it to my new phone.
I did the following
Now I have two exactly same entries for each and every contacts. I deleted all contacts, tried the entire process again, still the result sam
How to get around this?
Solved! Go to Solution.
yes you can create groups
on your phone go to the phonebook -> MENU -> filter -> tap on google
you should be able to see groups
which you can create on your computer
I have a better idea, go to
phonebook/contacts -> MENU -> Delete contacts -> Mark all -> Delete, no I'm not crazy
now on your Gmail -> click on contacts -> click on more actions -> on the drop down menu click on "import" -> choose the file -> and click import
you can do this last step first then delete them from your phone once you see them on your Gmail
on your phone
make sure you have a data plan or wifi connection
Settings -> accounts & sync -> make sure both
background data traffic
&
Activate auto-sync are selected
tap on Google -> make sure Sync Contacts it's selected and voila
also
you can edit your contacts on your computer to make sure there aren't any duplicates
go to settings -> about phone -> check both build number and android version
other ways to backup
Settings -> privacy -> Back up my data and Automatic restore should be selected
and also
Use one of these links to download the
Backup & Restore app

How to install it
You need to
go to settings -> applications -> check unknown sources
download IO File Manager
https://market.android.com/details?id=org.openintents.filemanager&feature=search_result
download the backup & restore app, transfer it to your SD card, use OI file manager to find it -> tap on it -> install it
Don't worry so much about backing up your apps
on your computer go to
market.android.com -> log in -> click on My Library -> and send all your apps to your phone
SMS/MMS
if you don't want to use the backup & restore app then
Install "backup SMS" to back up your SMS and MMS to your Gmail

or your SMS use
"backup & restore SMS"
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.riteshsahu.SMSBackupRestore&feature=search_result
or for your MMS use "Save MMS"

Thanks wooly,
I am hesitant to use the internet connection on my phone. Isnt there an offline method?
Also
The problem by synchronizing with google is
It will import all the contacts. which include contacts with no phone numbers, but just emails
Is there a way to choose only a particular group. I already have my contacts on gmail in a group called Phone.
Thanks wooly, That would have been my next question. You saved a discussion post
as for an offline alternative
My Phone Explorer, you need it in both your PC and Xperia
also you only need to sync once w/ google, after that only sync if you add, delete, edit a contact
Anytime

WOW, that is new to me. I was using My Phone explorer (PC) for K810i and very happy with it. I was not aware that we can use it with android toooooo.... Yes I do have it installed on PC.
That should be my solution. I can try it today evening only
Edit :
I got it worked with the google-cotact-group solution. It dint require any considerable bandwidth. Nevertheless I would depend on My phone explorer for any later such operations, since i know what its capable of from my previous experience using K810i
