That sounds a bit strange, have you been in contact with the What's App support to see if they have a solution to your query? I am afraid that my support regarding What's App is a bit limited due to the fact that the app is not manufactured by us.
One thing that might work is to clear the data for the app. This will reset all settings for the app which might do the trick. Find and tap Settings > Apps & notifications > Show all XX apps > What's App > Storage > Clear data > Tap "OK" > Restart the phone. Keep in mind though that this measure might erase the message history in what's app so it is advised to backup your content in the app before clearing data.
