I am never sure why there is so much uncertainty about these things:
CURRENT - MAX defined by the charger ACTUAL defined by device
VOLTAGE - MAX & ACTUAL defined by the charger
With some devices, the most common being Snapdragon phones, they can request the charger supply a higher voltage for quicker charging, but BOTH THE PHONE AND CHARGER NEED TO BE COMPATIBLE.
In this case the charger changes its voltage.
In any case, with a 5V charger, your phone will pull what it can.
There is no spec given, however from my experience of different chargers, I would say about 1A is the max for our phones.
Remember that if your phone is ON it is probably pulling 100-200mA so it has a material effect on charging speed.
As others have said, branded chargers are best.
Not because they are faster, but they provide a much cleaner 5V signal. Cheap chargers can damage your device as their voltage variation can be huge, even on a small 800mA load.
Hi how can I make my battery charge faster? It usually takes 2 hours from the charger & 4 hours from a pc usb port. The battery drains fast when using wifi or mobile data. Is it safe to use an iPad charger?
You probably cannot use a iPad charge, as it is not USB so will not fit, even with an adapter, and the voltage will be different.
HOWEVER FOR FASTER CHARGING WE HAVE HOPE:
Our MediaTek X10 chip supports their equivilant of FastCharging by Qualcomm:

Hi I have tried charging with an iPad 12W USB Power Adapter & it works!, charge time is only around 1 Hour! so far I have no issues with the phone at all.
Looks like it does charge a lot faster with 5v 2A charger. Even my old xpera P had 1.5A charger. Why sony included only 850mA charger with this phone? Using old xperia P charger, charges the phone a lot faster
The supplied charger is very underpowered. You should have no worries using a 1A charger and the odd charge on a 2A model is also ok.
